Tips for greater health this Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a chance to shed some light on a life-threatening condition that’s possible to treat if caught early enough. In our Village, we believe that knowledge is power. It’s why we like hosting wellness talks on topics like strokes, hearing loss and of course, breast cancer. From getting yearly mammograms to checking your breasts regularly, and staying healthy, here are a few ways you can protect yourself (and someone you love).

Watch your weight

Did you know that those who are overweight are more at risk of breast cancer after menopause? By avoiding a BMI of over 25, you can lessen your chances. Eating a healthy, balanced diet that’s high in fruits and vegetables and low in refined sugars and fatty foods will also stand you in good stead. Whole grains should be included regularly, as should lean proteins like chicken and fish.

Remain active

Even if you only start exercising in your later years, research has shown that increased physical activity can reduce your risk of breast cancer by at least 10%. All you need to aim for is 5 sessions of 30 minutes every week. This could be a walk, a Zumba class or even a Stretch and Tone class. Luckily, we offer all of these in our Village.

Cut down on your alcohol

Alcohol is a known catalyst for cancer risk. Regardless of the type of alcohol you prefer, studies have shown that those looking to remain breast cancer free should aim for no more than one unit of alcohol per day.

Go for your yearly mammogram

When prevention is the best cure, regular screenings are a must to ensure that you do not have breast cancer and can treat it early if it’s discovered that you do. Set a yearly calendar reminder on your phone that will pop up when it’s time to book your next one. That way, you’ll be less likely to let it pass you by.

Stop smoking

Studies have shown that those with a history of smoking have an increased risk of breast cancer. Not only will kicking the habit reduce your chances of getting cancer (of various types), but it will also help you become healthier overall.

A safety net of care should you ever need it

In our Village, we count ourselves lucky to have a state-of-the-art Care Centre that’s administered by industry leaders Total Care. This provides priceless peace of mind for our residents and their loved ones that they’ll be well taken care of should that time ever come.
